Kitchen gadgets, I love them and I want them all. They make life so much easier, right? At least, that’s what I’m thinking all the time when I see them and can’t have them. But the weird thing is; when I finally have them, I don’t use them. In the Netherlands having a blender wasn’t a great success. It was before the time smoothies and home-made juices were popular. So there it stood… in the corner on the kitchen counter. Later it moved into the cupboard… and some months later I just put it on Ebay… (new and never used of course).

Now in Ecuador I really need one. I mean, living so close to the beach with so much tropical fruits, you can’t live without, right? Learning from my former mistakes I vowed to myself to use it at least a few times a week. And it’s a huge succes. I am so happy with it. Almost every other day I make my own lemonade. Or should I say limeade, because we are using limes, not lemons. In spanish it’s called Limonada, so that’s the name I like to use.

I make the Limonada from whole limes. The juice is great, but doesn’t have the zest the citric oils, which contains a lot of flavour? Let’s use it! I cut the limes in a few pieces, put them in the blender with some water and mix it well. Strain it and you will notice your limonada will have a flavour which is much more intense. Yes, it will be a little more bitter because you are using al the peel, but I really like the taste like this.

This method will not only save time, for not having to juice all those limes, it will also save you a lot of limes. You’ll only need 3-4 limes to make a liter limonada. The limejuice-method will take a lot more limes for sure.

For me, this Limonada is the perfect drink on hot days.

Ingredients

3-4 limes*
sugar to taste
500 ml water
icecubes

Instructions

  • Cut each lime in 4 parts and put them in the blender.
  • Add sugar to taste. I use about 4 tbsp.
  • Fill the blender up to 500 ml and mix until the limes are cut into tiny pieces.
  • Strain it and put the limonada back into the blender.
  • If needed, add some extra sugar. It can be a little too sweet, but you will add ice which makes it a little less sweet.
  • Fill the blender with ice until 1 liter and mix until smooth.
  • Put in a glass, serve immediately
