These month the theme of the Dutch Foodblog Event is ‘The ultimate holiday feeling!’ and is hosted by Sanne who writes for her blog Uit de pan van San .

Now, I can hear you thinking this must be an easy theme for me, given all the travels that are made. But traveling is something completely different than being on a holiday! When I think of a holiday, and the ultimate holiday feeling, my thoughts go directly back to Portugal. It was the first time Alie and I went on the road together. It was 2004 and the European Soccer Championship was hosted in Portugal. We booked a hotel in the Algarve, had a wonderful beach holiday and visited two matches to support the Dutch Team. It was a wonderful time and already the first night we were pretty tipsy on Sangria. It became our favourite drink and every day we ordered at least one jug of Sangria to share. So for me, Sangria brings the ultimate holiday feeling.

Sangria is already for a long time on our to-make-list and this time Alie popped into the kitchen. Despite the fact that we don’t really have much choice in good and affordable wines in Ecuador, she made a delicious Homemade Sangria! And we could reminisce that fateful holiday. That holiday that would turn out such an important one. The one we so often talked about when we were stressed out during the days having a career in the Financial World . The holiday that started our quote  ‘we should start a beach cafe’ on stressful moments. And look at us now …  a couple of years later we are having our Sangria in Ecuador and are on our way to start that cafe in a lovely beach town.

So Sanne, thank you for hosting this month and this Homemade Sangria is our entry for the Dutch Foodblog Event of August!

Recipe: Homemade Sangria

Ingredients

1 bottle of red wine
100 ml brandy or a liquor of your choice (grand marnier)
100 ml orangejuice
sugar or sugar syrup to taste
1 orange
2 limes
1 appel (granny smith)
1 peach
few strawberries
Sprite to taste (ca 250-500ml)

Instructions

  • Clean the fruit very well and cut them into small pieces.
  • Combine the wine, the liquor, orange juice and all the fruit in a large jug.
  • Add sugar or sugar syrup and stir well.
  • Put the jug in the fridge for at least an hour to combine all the flavours and let it cool
  • Before serving you add 250 ml of sprite and stir it again.
  • Taste it
    • Is it too strong? Add more Sprite
    • Is it not sweet enough? Add some sugar syrup
  • Pour into nice glases without the fruit and enjoy!

Cheers!

Officially you do not put the fruit in the glasses, but to be honest… I like eating that fruit filled with all the flavours and wine. So if you like that too, just do it! Who cares 😉

You can make the Sangria earlier, so the fruity flavour is even richer,  but be aware not to leave it too long. The peel of the orange and lime can give it a lightly bitter taste, which I do not like.
